500 drones donated to Ukraine by ‘Star Wars’ actor Mark Hamill
Mark Hamill, the star of “Star Wars” donated 500 drones to help Ukraine fight back against Russian soldiers.
“Very simply: Ukraine needs drones,” Hamill said during an interview on Bloomberg Radio's “Sound On.”
“They define war outcomes, they protect their land, their people, they monitor the border, they're eyes in the sky,” Hamill said, adding that he was “honored” to assist the mission, which included collecting funding for Ukraine's UNITED24 “Army of Drones” initiative.
Last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the “Army of Drones” program's start, including Hamill's position as an ambassador. Donations made via UNITED24 have totaled more than $210 million.
“I was really shocked because they give me these updates at least two or three times a week about what's going on, and they said they've received over 500 drones since I started this,” the actor said to Fox News.
Drones, including off-the-shelf camera drones from DJI, have become an increasingly important part of the Ukraine war.
Ukraine has taken steps to counter Russia's use of drones, including the recent creation of an app that allows residents to cooperate with the military to shoot down approaching Russian drones and missiles.
Ukrainians who download the software may enter the target's name, such as a missile or a suicide drone, point their phones in the direction of the impending target, and push a red button.
The Ukrainian military will then see that marking on the map and utilize its position, coupled with radar technology, to track and shoot down the danger more efficiently.
