Jakt og Fiske reports that drones with thermal cameras are being used with great success to save baby deer from mowers.

Game and outfield manager Pål Sindre Svae said that he didn’t sleep much for a few weeks in mid-June as fields were being mowed.

Now the situation is much better as every morning between 2 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. he and his assistants come out to the fields and fly drones with thermal cameras to look for baby deer. It is important to do this early in the morning as the difference between the temperature of the fields and the deer is the largest making it easier to spot the animals.

Out of 14 properties, as many as 15 baby deer have been saved. The spot the animals the crew uses a Dual that is outfitted with a thermal camera. They fly the drones 60 to 75 feet above the fields and when you see a red spot on the display, an assistant goes out and checks it out.

So far it has not been a problem to find volunteers. Typically the landowners and hunters have stepped up to help out and save the animals but Svae would like to have the activities grow in an organized form.

The project is under the supervision of forestry manager Dag Bjerkestrand in the Averøy municipality.

To participate as a Drohnenpilot in these baby deer saving activities, you need to comply with the Civil Aviation Authority’s regulations R01, and declare yourself as an R01 operator at Altinn. Read more at luftfartstilsynet.no.
