President Trump threatens to shut down TikTok. Will DJI be next?

Last Friday, President Trump said to reporters aboard Air Force One, “As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the .”

Today, Mr. Trump has softened his tone a little bit by saying that TikTok will be shut down by September 15th, if it hasn’t been bought by Microsoft or another company.

The reason that Mr. Trump threatens to shut down the very popular app is, as he said on Monday that,

“It can’t be controlled for security reasons by China.”

The President added that he did not mind if Microsoft or another very secure, “very American” company bought it instead, according to the NY Times. TikTok has 100 million users in the United States.

Mr. Trump also said that the United States should receive money in return for letting the deal take place. The WSJ und Axios reported the President saying:

“I did say that ‘If you buy it…a very substantial portion of that price is going to have to come into the Treasury of the United States, because we’re making it possible for this deal to happen.’ Right now they don’t have any rights unless we give it to them.”

“So if we’re going to give them the rights, it has to come into this country. It’s a little bit like the landlord/tenant,” he added.

Apart from the question if a President is allowed to act as a dealmaker and can demand a fee in return for his services, it makes you wonder who will be next on Mr. Trump’s list? Last year it was Huawei. Now it is TikTok. Could the Chinese drone maker, DJI, that faces internal struggles and has been plagued by concerns raised by various parts of the Federal Government and lawmakers, be next?

Let us and our readers know what you think will happen in the comments. Do you think DJI might become Trump’s next target, once he is done with TikTok? Let us know in the comments below.

    • That would not be good but seems like a possibility at this point. Could TikTok be the canary in the coal mine?
