Remote ID for Drones is on track for finalization by the end of 2020

On October 5, the Bundesluftfahrtbehörde (FAA) submitted the final rules for Remote Identification of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Remote ID for Drones) and Operations of Small Unmanned Aircraft Over People to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The OMB now has 90 days to Review the new regulations, so it appears that Entfernte ID for Drones is well on track for finalization and publication before the end of this year, reports AOPA.

On the website from the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs and the Office of Management and Budget, the rules are listed as having entered their final stage. Companies, including Wing, DJIund AUVSI have scheduled meetings with the government to discuss the rules before they will be finalized. Requests for such meetings can be submitted hier.

Remote ID for Drones is generally viewed as the prerequisite for commercial unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operations such as delivery services by drone as envisioned by companies such as Amazon, UPSund Wing. These three companies are as of yet the only ones who have received their Part 135 certification and have been approved by the FAA to start delivering packages by drone to consumers in designated test areas. Wing, for instance, has been delivering library books to students in Christiansburg, Virginia. In a partnership with CVS, UPS Flight Forward uses Matternet drones to deliver medication to residents of The Villages retirement community in Florida.
