Norway Establishes Arctic Drone Base to Bolster Maritime Surveillance

In a move to enhance its maritime surveillance capabilities, has announced the establishment of a new long-range drone base at Andøya, located 300 km north of the Arctic Circle, reports The Barents Observer. The base will house advanced drones aimed at strengthening Norway’s ability to monitor its maritime interests in the Barents Sea.

Enhancing Situation Awareness and National Control

According to Minister of Defence Bjørn Arild Gram, the long-range drones will provide a significant boost to Norway’s continuous situation awareness and surveillance of the region.

“Good situation awareness is crucial for our ability to enact national control and freedom of action,” Gram stated in a recent announcement.

The government has high hopes for the Andøya base, which previously housed Norway’s fleet of P-3 Orion surveillance aircraft. In addition to maritime surveillance, the drones will also be employed in natural catastrophe response and rescue operations, as part of a multinational allied cooperation.

Preserving Key Base Functions for Allied Aircraft

The Andøya airbase boasts a 2,440-meter long runway, a 1,670-meter long crosswind path, and ample space for various aircraft types, including fighter jets. The base will also serve as a new ‘department for joint training and development,’ preserving key functions for allied aircraft operating in peace time, conflict, and war.

Moreover, the far northern island is home to the Andøya Spaceport, a space center that supports Norwegian military activities and contributes to bilateral and multilateral space projects.

The Increasing Importance of Drones in Modern Warfare

The establishment of the Andøya drone base comes at a time when drones have proven to be a crucial component of modern warfare, as evidenced by their extensive use in the ongoing war in .

, in particular, appears increasingly concerned about the threat of drone attacks, with recent military exercises by the Northern Fleet focusing on scenarios involving enemy drone attacks on key military bases.

As Norway bolsters its maritime surveillance capabilities with the new long-range drone base, it is clear that the country is taking proactive steps to ensure its national security and maintain a strong presence in the Arctic region.
