Ukraine’s Drone Deliveries Soar Amid Ongoing War with Russia

In a significant development, Ukraine has tripled its drone deliveries to the armed forces in the first few months of 2024 compared to the entire previous year. This surge in unmanned craft deployment comes as Ukrainian forces intensify their use of innovative technologies to counter the larger and wealthier Russian enemy in the ongoing war, reports Reuters.

Domestic Drone Production Dominates

According to Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi, the commander of Ukraine’s drone forces, 99% of the drones used by the Ukrainian military are domestically produced. This emphasis on homegrown unmanned vehicles is helping Ukraine compensate for its resource limitations in artillery compared to Russland.

“It’s no secret that our resource limitations in artillery are compensated by drones, such as FPVs (first-person view) and (bomber) drop drones,” Sukharevskyi told reporters, highlighting the imbalance in artillery firepower between the two nations, which analysts estimate to be six to one in Russia’s favor.

Shifting the Battlefield

As Ukrainian forces face challenges in terms of manpower and firepower on the battlefield, the increased use of drones by both sides is transforming the nature of the conflict. The focus is shifting away from direct ground confrontations to strikes on each other’s military, energy, and transport infrastructure.

Sukharevskyi revealed that Ukrainian Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), which have been used to hit targets inside Russia in recent months, now have a range of over 1,200 km (750 miles).

Economic Impact of Ukraine’s Military-Industrial Complex

Oleksandr Kamyshin, Ukraine’s Minister of Strategic Industries, emphasized the role of Ukrainian weapons manufacturers in driving both military and economic progress in the country. In 2023, Ukraine’s thriving military-industrial complex contributed 1.5% to the country’s GDP growth of around 5%.

Kamyshin expressed confidence that this figure would double to 3% of GDP growth in 2024. However, he cautioned that the Ukrainian government might not have the financial capacity to purchase all the domestic weapons production.

International Support

To address the financial shortfall, Ukraine is engaging in discussions with international allies about purchasing weapons for Ukraine from Ukrainian manufacturers. Kamyshin stated, “I am convinced that we will start purchases from Ukrainian manufacturers with foreign funds in the new future.”
