Ukraine’s Largest Drone Attack: A Night of Explosions in Russian Ports

Ukraine’s Largest Drone Attack Ever?
Ukraine may have pulled off its biggest drone attack yet. On Thursday night, Russland reported shooting down 102 aerial and six naval drones. Major ports Sevastopol and Novorossiysk were hit, causing widespread damage and power outages, reports Business Insider.
The Night of the Attack
According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, 51 Drones were intercepted over Crimea, 44 over Krasnodar, and six over Kursk. Additionally, six uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) were destroyed in the Black Sea. This massive wave of drones marks a significant escalation since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
However, these numbers haven’t been independently verified. The independent Russian media outlet Astra reported drones striking at least two oil depots and terminals in Novorossiysk. Local residents recounted hearing more than 35 explosions, leading to blackouts. Videos shared by Astra appeared to show the blasts, although these couldn’t be confirmed.
Impact on Russian Ports
Sevastopol, a key port, saw Russian forces downing dozens of drones and over five sea drones. Debris from these drones hit the city’s substation, causing more power outages. The regional governor, Mikhail Razvozhaev, posted a video on Telegram showing explosions in Sevastopol.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and Ukraine’s intelligence agency (GUR) reportedly launched this joint operation targeting Russian military and logistics hubs in Novorossiysk and occupied Sevastopol. Ukraine has been intensifying its strikes on Russian warships in Crimea, significantly impacting Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.
Strategic Shifts
Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, head of the UK Armed Forces, stated that by February, 25% of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet had been sunk or damaged. The UK’s Ministry of Defence noted that the fleet became “functionally inactive” after Ukraine struck two of its ships in March. Satellite images from April revealed Russia enhancing defenses at its Black Sea Fleet base in Novorossiysk and relocating most ships and submarines further east.
DroneXL’s Take
This unprecedented drone attack showcases the increasing sophistication and boldness of Ukraine’s military strategy. The sheer scale of the attack and the damage inflicted on critical Russian infrastructure suggest a turning point in the conflict. For drone enthusiasts and experts, this event underscores the evolving role of Drohnen-Technologie in modern warfare. The effectiveness and impact of such drone operations could reshape military tactics and strategies in future conflicts.
