has deployed a new locally-made drone-missile weapon system against for the first time, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The weapon, named “Palyanytsia,” represents a significant advancement in Ukraine’s domestic arms production capabilities.

A New Class of Weapon

The Ukrainian-made Palyanytsia is described as a “rocket drone” by Oleksandr Kamyshin, Ukraine’s Minister for Strategic Industries. While specific details remain undisclosed, Kamyshin characterized it as a high-speed, precision-targeted projectile.

“We have mortar drones, artillery drones, and now, we introduce a completely new class of weapon — rocket drones,” Kamyshin stated on X. “The rocket drone ‘Palyanytsia’ was successfully used today, striking a military target in temporarily occupied territory.”

Symbolic Naming

The weapon’s name, Palyanytsia, carries cultural significance. It refers to a type of traditional Ukrainian bread and has been used as a shibboleth to distinguish Ukrainians from Russians due to pronunciation differences, reports Politico.

Successful Deployment

President Zelenskyy announced the weapon’s first combat use during a speech celebrating Ukraine’s Independence Day. “This is our new method of retaliation against the aggressor,” he declared.

Coinciding with the announcement, Russian authorities reported a massive explosion at an ammunition depot in the Voronezh region bordering Ukraine. However, no official connection has been made between this incident and the Palyanytsia’s deployment.

Domestic Arms Production

The introduction of the Palyanytsia aligns with Ukraine’s efforts to bolster its domestic arms production. Officials have long sought partnerships with Western defense companies to manufacture modern weapons within Ukraine. Companies like ‘s Rheinmetall and ‘s Nammo have already agreed to produce armored vehicles and ammunition in the country.
