Finnish-Ukrainian Joint Venture to Launch Major Drone Production Facility

Summa Defence Ltd, a Finnish defense technology group, has announced plans to establish a significant drone manufacturing facility in Finland through a strategic partnership with Ukrainian Drohnen-Unternehmen. The facility, set to begin operations in the first half of 2025, aims to boost production capacity for combat drones while establishing industrial-scale drone manufacturing capabilities in Europa.
Strategic Partnership Details
The initiative will operate through a newly formed subsidiary, Summa Drones Ltd, which will create a joint venture with four Ukrainian drone manufacturers: Kort, Elf Systems, Skyassist, and MPS Development. The facility will produce a comprehensive range of unmanned systems, including aerial, ground, and marine drones.
Meeting Critical Defense Needs
“The demand for Drohnen-Technologie and production capability is high,” states Jussi Holopainen, CEO of Summa Defence Ltd. “Drones will be delivered not only to Ukraine but also across the European Union and NATO Countries.”
The project reflects the growing recognition of unmanned systems as crucial components in modern defense and security infrastructure. These drones have already proven their strategic value in Ukraine, particularly in:
- Protecting critical infrastructure
- Supporting emergency operations
- Conducting rescue missions
Dual-Use Technology Focus
The facility represents part of Summa Defence’s broader strategy to develop dual-use technologies focusing on:
- Situational awareness
- Mobility solutions
- Protection systems
This approach aims to serve both civilian and military applications, strengthening security of supply across multiple sectors.
