Drone with a thermal camera comes to the rescue

A drone with a thermal camera was used by Policía y Bomberos to help locate two people from a canoe that was taking on water in Bridgewater, MA.

Police received a phone call from a concerned father who reported that his son and a friend were on Town River when their canoe got damaged and began taking on water.

Police and fire rescue units deployed a boat from the Lake Nippennicket boat ramp and while they could establish verbal contact with the two 22-year-old canoers, the rescuers were unable to locate them.

One of the Bridgewater Police Department officers deployed a dron policial with a thermal camera and quickly found the two canoers roughly 200 feet away. The two young men were guided out of the chest-deep water and brought back to shore where they were reunited with their family members.

“Deploying the drone from the deck of the fireboat and using thermal imaging gave responders the visibility they needed to locate the individuals,” said Police Chief Christopher Delmonte according to CBS. “Fortunately weather conditions were favorable, the individuals were not injured and coordination with the fire department was well executed.”
