DJI Mavic 3 vs Mavic 3 Pro – WORTH UPGRADING?

Now that the DJI Mavic 3 Pro has been officially announced, I’m sure there will be a ton of questions about whether it’s worth upgrading to a Mavic 3 Pro if you’re coming from the Mavic 3. To be honest, the answer to this question is pretty straightforward. However, there are a couple of things that you need to consider. There are three considerations that you need to make before you pull the trigger and buy the DJI Mavic 3 Pro.

1. The Camera on the DJI Mavic 3 Pro

Starting out first is of course the camera. The biggest difference between these two models is the camera. And of course, the brand new 3x lens that has been introduced in the Mavic 3 Pro lineup is amazing. But you need to consider whether you really need it. Personally, I can say from my own personal experience that I fell in love with this brand-new lens.

The 70-millimeter look is something that I definitely needed when it comes to creating those great-looking, interesting-looking shots from a drone. Because let’s be fair, the 24-millimeter wide-angle lens is pretty standard, and we’ve seen that traditional drone look, and we’ve been seeing it for the past couple of years, and we’re pretty familiar with it. However, if you want to become a better storyteller and evoke more emotions, and create better-looking images, then of course having different lenses helps you tremendously.

With this new 3x 70-millimeter lens, we are seeing exactly that, because DJI is introducing a brand new look for our footage that previously has never been possible before. Now this is something special as of course, the Mavic 3 has the regular 166 millimeter seven times zoom lens, which is great, and it has been reworked for the Mavic 3 Pro with a better aperture of f/3.4 as opposed to f/4.4 on the Mavic 3. And of course, the image quality is a little bit better, but putting them side by side, there really isn’t that much of a big difference to justify getting the Mavic 3 Pro just because the 7x lens has been reworked.

However, the 3x lens is what really makes the difference, because it’s a perfect middle ground between the wide-angle look and the super-zoomed look of the 7x telephoto lens. Because now with this 70-millimeter look out of the 3x lens, you are creating so much more depth, so many more layers and that’s completely changing the way your shots look.

Like I’ve noticed in the past couple of weeks since I got the Mavic 3 Pro to check it out, I was mostly attracted to that focal length of 70 millimeters because it’s the perfect middle ground. As I mentioned before, you can still catch a lot of details and manage to cram a lot of objects into your shot, but not only one big thing where you can’t focus on anything else. You still have a lot of depth and objects that you can capture in your shot, but you have that compression that you simply cannot get with the wide-angle lens.

Combining that with the fact that this lens has great dynamic range, shoots flat color profile, and supports all the intelligent flight modes that the regular 24-millimeter lens supports, makes it a no-brainer for me.

So this is the first consideration that you need to make: how much will these changes affect your workflow, your type of filming, and how much will they improve your general experience with the drone?

For me, they completely changed the way I shoot; they have already done that. But it’s up to you to decide this huge, huge factor and how much of a difference it’s going to make for you.

2. The Price of the Mavic 3 Pro

The next consideration that you need to make is the price. If you already have the Mavic 3, then you might be a little bit frustrated because DJI introduces a new model every couple of months, and you might feel left behind.

The price is kind of steep, but of course, new models are always expensive, and especially since they bring new improvements and upgrades, they only get more and more expensive.

However, this is not exactly 100% true in this case because if you don’t have the Mavic 3 and you are looking to upgrade from any other drone, then it’s actually a great deal to get the Mavic 3 Pro because it’s slightly cheaper or at the same price as the Mavic 3.

So, I am going to put the prices on the screen because they tend to fluctuate between different combos, variations, and bundles of the same drone. There are so many different configurations, options, and bundles that you can buy, so it’s up to you to decide which one you would like to get and what makes sense for you.

I heard from many people that they’re planning to sell their Mavic 3 with everything they have, the batteries, the chargers, the remotes, and they can buy a Mavic 3 Pro bundle because it makes more sense. If you can get some money back from your sale and put it towards the purchase of this new bundle, it’s actually a nice balance between the new price and the money that you will be able to get from your sale.

So, that might be something that would interest you, depending on whether you have the Mavic 3 or not and whether you plan to sell it or not. But this is another important factor that you need to take into consideration: the price of the Mavic 3 Pro.

DJI Mavic 3 Pro weighs 937 grams

And finally, something that I don’t see many people talk about yet, but it’s a pretty big deal, is the fact that the Mavic 3 Pro has an increased weight of 937 grams on my scale. I think the official weight is even more than that; I believe it’s about 950 grams. Not exactly sure of the correct number, however, it’s a lot more than 900, which is the limit in many European Países.

I’m not sure how it is in the US and in other Western countries, but in Europa, you have a limit for flying a drone like this. It has to be under 900 grams, and if it’s more than 900 grams, you need a different level of authorization, so you need a different certificate to legally fly this drone in Europe.

And that is because this drone is now considered a pro drone that, of course, has a lot more requirements. A lot more rules to be followed when talking about flying it in the city close to people, whether they are involved in what you’re filming or not, how much distance there is between you and the person that has been filmed, and stuff like that.

There are so many requirements, and European laws are pretty strict when it comes to flying a drone, and especially if it’s that heavy, which is more than 900 grams, it becomes even more strict. So, there is a huge consideration for you to make, especially if you are from Europe watching this video and you’re considering buying the Mavic 3 Pro.

You need to figure out what you’re going to do with it. How you’re going to proceed legally because if you’re only flying outside of the city around nature, there is nobody stopping you from flying it, that might be a good consideration.

However, if you plan to shoot commercially with it and you would like to be Legal, which is, of course, always recommended, then you need to figure out this situation because it’s a pretty massive thing. And of course, you need to pass an exam, you have to be certified, and stuff like that. So, it is one more step that you need to take if you want to own the DJI Mavic 3 Pro, and I think this is a big deal, so it shouldn’t be neglected.

Would I recommend the Mavic 3 Pro?

With that being said, though, would I recommend the Mavic 3 Pro to you? Absolutely, yes, I would definitely recommend it to you 100%. If you have the money, if you have the chance to buy one, I would highly advise you to do it because I think it’s a game-changer in a way that we haven’t seen before.

Because previously, of course, we’ve had the Mavic 3, we’ve had those lenses, the 1x and the 7x. But the 7x was a little bit more gimmicky. Well, it was usable from time to time, but not always. And I still am kind of on the fence. I mean, I like the look of the 7x zoom lens. However, it’s not perfect. It has some work to be done about it.

However, the 3x lens is what really separates this drone from pretty much any other drone that doesn’t have interchangeable lenses. I still feel like this is the drone to buy if you are serious about cinematography. If you’re serious about making the best content you can and making the most dynamic footage possible by using all these three lenses because they are meant to be used to tell a better story.

And if you know how to use them, I’m sure you will find a way to squeeze the most out of them and really enjoy the Mavic 3 Pro. That’s exactly what I’m planning to do in the upcoming months. I really enjoy using this drone, and I plan to use it a whole lot more than I ever used the Mavic 3 before because it’s going to open doors that have been closed up until this point.
