DJI Enterprise lancera-t-elle une nouvelle caméra thermique demain ?

Like many of you, I have been wondering what DJI will be launching tomorrow. Some have speculated that we will see the new tomorrow. That seems unlikely as the teaser image was tweeted by and not DJI Global (consumer). Initially, I thought it would be a new and more powerful zoom camera for the existing drone. However, over the weekend other photos and insights have made me change my mind. I now expect DJI to launch a new thermal camera tomorrow morning at 8:00 am EST. The remaining question is, for which drone? The DJI Matrice 300 RTK or the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual?

Somebody on Twitter pointed out that the 🔥🔥 emojis in DJI Enterprise’s tweet could suggest a new thermal camera, which seemed plausible indeed. Later, OsitaLV posted tweeted this photo of a modified Mavic 2 drone from Resolve with an upgraded FLIR thermal camera to overcome the low thermal resolution from the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual.

These two bits of information made me reconsider what DJI might be launching tomorrow morning. I now think that we will likely see a new, in-house developed thermal camera from DJI Enterprise.

Initially, we were looking at the thermal cameras and compared them to the teaser photo from DJI Enterprise. The FLIR thermal cameras did not seem to match the teaser photo released by DJI. However, DJI already has its own in-house developed thermal camera that is used on the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual, the lens design of which seems to be more in-line with the teaser photo.

So, with that we now expect DJI Enterprise to release a new thermal camera tomorrow. The only remaining question is for which drone?

New thermal camera for the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual or Matrice 300 RTK?

Will it be a new thermal payload for the RTK where it would possibly replace the current DJI Zenmuse XT2 with its 640×512 thermal resolution?

Or, will it be a new thermal camera for the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual, which is a very popular and relatively affordable drone for and rescue crews?

I’m leaning towards the latter as one could argue that the biggest shortcoming of the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual is the limited resolution of its thermal camera (160×120 pixels).

The low thermal resolution means that it will be harder to spot heat signatures when flying at a greater distance or altitude from any subject on the ground. A DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual with a higher resolution of let’s say 640 by 512 pixels would do a much better job of finding missing people.

An upgrade for the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual with a higher resolution thermal camera would keep that drone competitive for the foreseeable future (think Autel EVO II Dual). And the fact that thermal camera might be developed in-house by DJI, could help to keep the profit margins intact while providing a higher spec product at a very competitive price.

What do you think DJI Enterprise will launch tomorrow? A new thermal camera for the Matrice 300 RTK, the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual, or something else completely? Let us know in the comments below.
