Skydio 2 price increases 35% to $1,349

Les Skydio 2 price shot up a substantial 35%, from $999 to $1,349 to reflect the increased costs of the components that go into the drone, said a company official.

Skydio 2 price increases 35% to $1,349

When the drone was launched, we were pleasantly surprised by the competitive price of $999. At the time that seemed like a very reasonable price for a drone that offers unmatched self-flying capabilities, but less impressive video and photo specs.

However, now that the price of the 2 has shot up to $1,349, the drone is significantly less competitive. Unless you really require or need the self-flying capabilities of the Skdyio 2, there are other drones out there that will give you more bang for your buck in terms of both photography and videography capabilities. We think of the Autel EVO II series (AMZN), the DJI Mavic 2 Pro at $1,599 (DJI, AMZN), and the newly launched Fly More Combo at $1,299 (DJI, AMZN).

According to a Skydio official, the price increase was warranted to offset a significant increase in the costs of the components that go into the Skydio 2, due to global trends in supply and demand.

We have seen a shortage of chips that has definitely had an impact on all manufacturers that use such components in their products, so it is not surprising to see the same in the .

Two things stand out to us, however.

If Skydio needs to increase the price of the Skydio 2 by 35% due to increased global component cost and/or increased demand for such components, it seems likely that Skydio, while being a US-based company, uses a significant number of foreign, and possibly Chinese-made, parts in their quadcopter that is designed, assembled, and supported in the USA.

The second thing that we are wondering about is what the effect of the price increase of these components will be for the Skydio X2 that is already not inexpensive at $14,499 including a thermal camera. Will the US taxpayers end up paying more for that Skydio drone as well?

The 35% price hike for the Skydio 2 drone will only apply to any orders coming in after May 13, 2021.

  1. Yes, it uses Made in China parts just like everything else out there. Specifically, the NVIDIA TX2 which is manufactured in China, among other pieces.

  2. I was expecting an upgrade before I bought given it’s been a few years on the market as is. Maybe a 30min batt. I managed some correspondence with a Skydio consultant in Feb who indicated a release in Australia in April. I haven’t heard anything despite reply emails. Will they ship it? What is the cost? Can’t do the research. And I can’t find what is and isn’t included in various packages regards software etc. There is an indication that there is a sports model and enterprise model of the Skydio 2 but their site will not elaborate. Maybe they are the same. Can’t tell. Do I need to seek 3rd party advise on this only? Seems like the demand has resulted in a price hike with no extra value and stonewall communications to potential customer. I’m sorry but if i’m forking out on a top end drone I’d like questions answered. Too bad. I’ll get something cheap. Who needs this luxury? Very annoyed.
