DJI Mini 4 Pro Range Test BVLOS in Canada

Good day, folks, Shawn here from Air Photography. Today, I took on a simple challenge – conducting a range test by sending my DJI Mini 4 Pro drone out over the water. Now, here’s something I should clarify right away: I’m in Canada. This is crucial because here, we can fly our mini drones beyond our visual line of sight (BVLOS), as long as it’s done safely.
My drone, for example, took a low-altitude flight over the water, ensuring that if anything were amiss, it would harmlessly drop into the water, not endangering boats or people.
Safety, as always, is paramount. And while Canada might have more lenient regulations in this aspect, it’s essential to understand your local laws and adhere to them.
The day of my test wasn’t perfect – there was a breeze, which could potentially influence the drone’s range. But, the challenge was simple: Fly out until the DJI Mini 4 Pro indicated a need to return, then head back. No undue risks.
I used the Mini 4 Pro for this test. The drone smoothly ascended, hovering over the water. Our journey, admittedly, wasn’t the most thrilling sight – a vast expanse of water. But, that’s not where the excitement lay. The real anticipation? Discovering just how far the Mini 4 Pro could go.
As we progressed, the drone reported back its telemetry. We reached over 3 km with an 86% battery. A fleeting encounter with a bird reminded me of the unpredictable elements when flying outdoors. Yet, the Mini 4 Pro impressed me with its features. Cruise control, Waypoint missions, omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, and an enhanced tracking feature stand out.
We peaked at a little over 5 km when the drone’s systems advised a return due to battery concerns. Despite my initial belief that the drone had sufficient battery, it’s a reminder always to CONFIANCE the system. Upon return, we still had a 24% battery reserve, suggesting we might have squeezed out a bit more distance on a calmer day.
En conclusion, le Mini 4 Pro’s performance is commendable. Today’s exercise was not only a range test but a lesson in safety, understanding your equipment, and respecting the elements. If you enjoyed following along, I’d appreciate a thumbs up. Thanks for joining, and I’ll see you in our next adventure!
