Lower Township Police Invests $70K in Advanced Drone Command Vehicle

A significant upgrade to emergency response capabilities is coming to Lower Township, as the council approves a $70,614 investment in a sophisticated drone command control mobile unit. The 2024 Ram Promaster van, set to be outfitted by 10-75 Emergency Vehicles, will serve as a cutting-edge mobile command center for both planned and emergency operations, reports cmcherald.com.

More Than Just a Drone Unit

Lt. Brian McEwing emphasizes that this vehicle represents a hybrid approach to emergency management. The solar-battery-powered command center will feature multiple computer workstations, dedicated internet connectivity, and radio communications, enabling real-time drone operations from any location within the township or beyond.

Growing Drone Fleet and Capabilities

The department currently maintains three drones, with two equipped with thermal imaging capabilities. The largest drone measures approximately 30 inches square and weighs 9 pounds, while the smallest is specifically designed for indoor operations, enhancing officer safety during building searches and potential standoff situations.

Expanding Team of Certified Operators

The drone unit has evolved significantly since its inception, now boasting seven certified opérateurs de drones. “What we are seeing now is drones as a first responder,” McEwing notes, highlighting how these unmanned systems often provide crucial information before ground units arrive at a scene.

Primary Mission: Search and Rescue

The department’s drone program prioritizes public safety and operations. A recent success story involved locating a missing person south of the Cape May Canal. The unit has also proven invaluable during large-scale events like Escape the Cape, where drones help monitor approximately 1,000 participants in water activities.

Privacy and Public Trust

McEwing addresses privacy concerns head-on, stating, “We are very in tune with the privacy of the public. Our mission is safety – keeping people out of danger.” The department maintains strict protocols regarding drone usage, focusing solely on public safety applications.

DroneXL’s Take

This investment by Lower Township Department represents a growing trend in law enforcement’s adoption of drone technology for first responders. The integration of advanced drone technology with a mobile command center showcases how modern public safety agencies are leveraging unmanned systems to enhance their operational capabilities while maintaining a strong commitment to public privacy and safety.
