Saab Introduces Game-Changing UAV Training System, Addressing Modern Warfare Demands

Saab unveiled a sophisticated new UAV training capability at I/ITSEC 2024 in Orlando, Floride, marking a significant advance in preparing military forces for the realities of drone warfare. The system, which can simulate both offensive drone operations and counter-UAV missions, represents a direct response to the evolving nature of modern combat, as demonstrated in recent global conflicts.
Advanced Training Features Meet Real-World Demands
The system’s versatility stands out as its defining characteristic. Built around a commercial off-the-shelf UAV platform, it can be configured with various sensors and simulated weapons to match specific training scenarios. “We deliver that as a service, where we come with a drone and pilot and offer it as the threat,” explains Hans Lindgren, head of business development at Saab.
What sets this system apart is its dual-role capability. During exercises, it can function both as an offensive asset and a simulated threat, providing military units with comprehensive training experiences. The UAV comes equipped with a sophisticated laser target system that enables virtual engagement with ground forces while recording their responses for later analysis.
Integration and Implementation
The UK Armed Forces have emerged as the first customer to adopt this instrumented UAV service, recognizing its potential to transform military readiness. The system seamlessly integrates with Saab’s exercise control software EXCON, allowing it to be incorporated into existing training frameworks without significant operational disruption.
“The need for a solution that makes soldiers ready to detect, engage and hide from these is crucial,” emphasizes Joakim Alhbin, head of Saab’s Training and Simulation business unit. This sentiment reflects growing concerns about drone warfare capabilities among military planners worldwide.
Addressing Modern Combat Realities
Recent conflicts, particularly in Ukraine, have highlighted the critical role of UAVs in modern warfare. Saab’s training system directly addresses these emerging challenges by providing realistic scenarios for both drone operations and counter-drone tactics. The system’s ability to record troop activities and collect performance data enables objective assessment and helps improve counter-UAV survivability rates.
The introduction of this training capability comes at a crucial time, as military forces worldwide grapple with the need to adapt their training programs to address evolving aerial threats. An unnamed customer has already placed an order for multiple prototype systems, indicating strong market interest in this innovative approach to military preparedness.
Through this comprehensive training solution, Saab is helping bridge the gap between traditional military training and the realities of modern drone warfare, ensuring forces are better prepared for the complexities of contemporary combat scenarios.
