Pioneer in Firefighting Drone Technology, Zhang Daibing, Dies at 47

Zhang Daibing, a leading figure in ‘s and founder of innovative firefighting drone company Yunzhihang Technology, has died at age 47. His passing was confirmed through an official obituary released Friday, though no cause of death was specified, reports the South China Morning Post.

A distinguished researcher turned entrepreneur, Zhang made significant contributions to both military and civilian drone applications, particularly in the realm of emergency response technology. His work in high-payload drone systems has helped reshape approaches to high-rise firefighting and building maintenance.

Zhang’s most notable technological breakthrough came in 2021, when his team developed revolutionary high-voltage direct-drive technology allowing drones to carry payloads of up to 1,102 pounds. This innovation enabled drones to lift firefighting equipment, including water cannons and hosepipes, to heights exceeding 328 feet – a capability that addressed critical challenges in urban emergency response.

Before founding Yunzhihang Technology in 2018, Zhang held several prestigious positions in academia and research. As deputy director of the Unmanned Systems Research Institute at the National University of Defence Technology (NUDT), he helped shape China’s approach to drone technology development. His research portfolio included leadership roles in over 20 national, military, and government projects.

Zhang’s expertise was widely recognized through various appointments, including membership in the People’s Liberation Army’s Ground Forces Equipment Department drone systems expert group. He also served as a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Microelectronics and held a distinguished expert position at Norinco’s computer research institute.

His contributions to the field earned him significant recognition, including a first-class Military Scientific and Technological Progress Award and a second-class Invention Award from Hunan province. After completing his PhD at NUDT in 2007, Zhang remained committed to advancing through both academic research and practical applications.

Beyond conventional drone applications, Zhang’s company developed innovative solutions like a “robotic snake” and specialized drones for building inspection and maintenance. These developments have particular significance for urban safety and infrastructure maintenance, potentially reducing risks for human workers in dangerous environments.

Zhang’s passing represents a significant loss to the drone industry, particularly in the realm of emergency response and safety applications. His work in high-payload drone systems continues to influence the development of practical solutions for urban safety challenges, with applications extending beyond firefighting to various aspects of building maintenance and emergency response.
