Drone technology helps to investigate crash and crime scenes in Alabama
Members of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division and State Bureau of Investigation recently found themselves back in the classroom to learn how to use scanners and Technologie des drones to investigate crash and crime scenes.
According to WTVM, the agency is currently using both laser scanners and drone technology to collect different types of information from crash and crime scenes throughout the state to create 3D images. Using these new technologies will allow investigators to collect all the required information and evidence faster and more accurately.
“Along with our partners who already have the drones and the laser scanners, we can take and bring all three together and actually produce real life, almost realistic scenes and actually virtually tour the jurors or the courts through the crime scene,” said senior trooper Phillip Faulkner.
Joey Hamilton, UAS manager for ALEA, and SBI said that when you put this information together with the ground information that THI teams collect in combination with the FARO scanners, you now have three layers of accuracy which make for a better scene altogether.
Furthermore, drone technology allows for faster digital recreation of the crash or crime scenes, reducing the amount of time a roadway would be closed.
