DJI Remote ID: FPV, Mavic Air 2, Mavic 2 Zoom, Pro, Phantom 4 Pro v2.0 delayed
DJI, the world’s top civilian drone and creative camera technology firm, is committed to keeping its customers informed about their compliance with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) remote identification (Remote ID) regulation.
Les Remote ID regulation is all about a drone’s ability to send out its identification and location while flying. The FAA wants this system in place to increase overall awareness, manage the airspace efficiently, ensure compliance, and assist law enforcement.
According to the FAA, from September 16, 2023, any drone pilot who needs to register their Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) must follow this remote ID rule.
Since September 16, 2022, all DJI drones, including Mavic 3 Pro, Mavic 3 Classic, Inspire 3, and DJI Mini 3, come with built-in Remote ID.
If you’re a drone pilot using other, older DJI models, here’s how you can comply with the remote ID rule:
- Firstly, you can update your drone’s firmware. Many of DJI’s latest drones have received, or will soon get firmware updates that support remote ID.
- Secondly, if your drone model doesn’t allow firmware updates for remote ID, you can buy a separate broadcast module. This device can be added to your drone and will broadcast the required identification and location data.
- Finally, you can fly your drone within FAA-Recognized Identification Areas (FRIAs) where remote ID isn’t needed.
However, it’s important to note that some older DJI drones can’t receive firmware updates for Remote ID due to hardware limitations. If you own one of these models, DJI suggests buying a separate broadcast module to stay compliant with the remote ID rules.
In conclusion, if you’re a DJI drone owner, be sure to check your drone’s compatibility and take the necessary steps to comply with the FAA’s remote ID regulations by September 16, 2023.

Can you please tell us where you got this information. I manage a fleet of Phantom 4 Pro V2’s for a survey company and have heard mixed answers on whether DJI will firmware update them to be compliant with Remote ID.
