Divers Find DJI Mini Drone with Unique Footage at Scottish Cliffs
Members of the Caithness Diving Club made an unusual discovery during a recent dive at the Geo of Sclaites, Duncansby Head in Scotland. The divers found a DJI Mini drone at the bottom of the sea, complete with a memory card containing photos and videos of its owners, according to a report by BBC News.
Unexpected DJI Mini Drone Find During Routine Dive
While the Caithness Diving Club is accustomed to exploring shipwrecks along the Caithness coast, finding a drone underwater was a surprising turn of events. The drone is believed to have struck the cliffside, possibly causing the battery to eject, before plummeting into the sea.
“The drone itself is obviously a write-off, but it would be nice to get the memory card back to the owners at least,” a spokesman for the diving club stated.
Unique Footage Recovered
The memory card, successfully retrieved by one of the divers, contained intriguing images and videos. The footage showed a couple with their dog waving up at the drone, as well as a campervan with an Italian registration plate.
Efforts to Locate Owners
The diving club is now hoping to find the owners of the drone and return the memory card to them. The unique nature of the footage, particularly the Italian-registered campervan, could prove crucial in identifying the drone’s owners.
Environmental Consideration
It’s worth noting that the divers brought the drone back to the surface as part of their efforts to remove litter from the seabed, showcasing a commendable commitment to environmental stewardship.
DroneXL’s Take
This incident highlights the growing prevalence of drones in recreational activities and tourism. It also underscores the importance of responsible drone operation, especially in challenging environments like coastal cliffs. As we’ve seen in recent drone incident reports, flying in such areas can be risky and may lead to equipment loss or damage.
Moreover, this story demonstrates the potential for drones to capture unique perspectives and memories for travelers. However, it also serves as a reminder of the need for proper drone insurance and the value of backing up footage regularly.
