Ancient Fish-Trapping Canals Discovered by Drone Archaeology in Belize

A groundbreaking archaeological discovery using drones and Google Earth has revealed an intricate 4,000-year-old network of fish-trapping canals in Belize’s Yucatán peninsula, according to research published in Science Advances.

Aerial Technology Reveals Hidden History

The research team used and satellite imagery to identify distinctive zigzag patterns of ancient canals stretching for miles through wetlands.

“The aerial imagery was crucial to identify this really distinctive pattern of zigzag linear canals,” explained study co-author Eleanor Harrison-Buck from the University of .

Ancient Engineering Marvel

These sophisticated canal networks, located in what’s now the Crooked Tree sanctuary, were constructed approximately 4,000 years ago by semi-nomadic people. The system included holding ponds and channels designed specifically to trap freshwater fish species, particularly catfish. The infrastructure remained in active use for over 1,000 years.

Archaeological Significance

The discovery provides crucial insights into pre-Maya engineering capabilities and resource management. Archaeological evidence, including barbed spearpoints found near the canals, suggests these tools were likely attached to sticks for fishing purposes. The canals played a vital role in diversifying diets and supporting growing populations, laying the groundwork for the later emergence of Maya civilization.

DroneXL’s Take

This discovery exemplifies the growing importance of drone inspection in modern . Drones have revolutionized how we uncover and document historical sites, offering perspectives and data collection capabilities that would be impossible through traditional ground-based methods. The ability to identify large-scale ancient infrastructure from the air demonstrates the unique value of drone technology in understanding our past and preserving cultural heritage.
