Medevac Helicopter Diverted Due to Mystery Drones in New Jersey

A medevac helicopter was forced to abort its emergency response mission in Branchburg Township, , after encountering unauthorized drones near the designated landing zone, reports NJ.com. The incident, which occurred on November 26, adds to growing concerns about unexplained drone activity in the region.

Emergency Response Disrupted

The incident unfolded when were preparing to transport a seriously injured accident victim in Somerset County. Security personnel from Raritan Valley Community College had already begun securing the area for the helicopter’s landing when the operation was suddenly canceled at 6:54 p.m. due to drone presence in the vicinity.

Brian Serge, supervisor of security at the college, expressed puzzlement over the situation. “We never found out what the actual drones were,” he stated. “It’s kind of a mystery. We were asking around about that, but nobody knew anything.”

Broader Pattern of Suspicious Activity

This disruption occurs amid a series of unexplained drone sightings over Morris and Somerset counties in recent weeks. The mysterious aircraft have been observed hovering in groups for extended periods, prompting FBI involvement and leading to increased security measures.

Federal Response and Restrictions

The Federal Aviation Administration has implemented drone flight restrictions around sensitive areas, including:
Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, located six miles from the community college
Picatinny Arsenal in Jefferson and Rockaway Township

The FAA has issued stern warnings about unauthorized drone operations, stating that operators endangering aircraft or pedestrians could face fines up to $75,000 and revocation of their pilot certificates.

Impact on Emergency Services

The outcome for the accident victim remains unclear, with local authorities not specifying whether alternative transportation was arranged via ambulance or if the helicopter was able to land at a different location. The Branchburg have referred all inquiries to the FBI, highlighting the serious nature of the investigation.

DroneXL’s Take

This incident underscores the critical balance between drone operations and emergency services. While drones have revolutionized many aspects of our lives, including their vital role in first responder operations, unauthorized flights pose significant risks to public safety. The growing concern over mysterious drone activities also highlights the importance of data security and proper oversight in drone operations. As advances, we must ensure that proper protocols and security measures are in place to prevent interference with critical emergency services.
