The highway patrol chief was fired after investigations found that improper equipment was purchased without following protocol, according to the Saskatchewan’s Minister of Highways.

“It was improper equipment we don’t use and we don’t need in the highway patrol,” Highways Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “It is a blatant disregard for authority.”

This was in reference to an incident in which the chief went ahead and bought a shotgun after having been told not to do so, according to CBC.

The purchases added up to $560,000 CAD in total, of which $140,000 of purchased equipment cannot be used by the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol (SHP), including a drone.

“The ministry did not document a business need to buy certain types of firearms and weapons given the Highway Patrol’s role as a first responder in emergency situations,” an investigative report said.
