The Deal and Deliveries

In May 2021, Poland signed a contract with Baykar for four systems of TB2 drones. Each system includes six aircraft and three ground control stations, totaling 24 drones. The first delivery of six TB2s occurred in October 2022 at Poland’s 12th Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Base.

On May 16, the final shipment was completed during an event in Poland. The ceremony featured prominent figures such as Poland’s deputy defense minister, the head of Turkey’s Presidency of Defence Industries agency, and Baykar’s general manager, Haluk Bayraktar.

A First for Turkey

Haluk Bayraktar took to social media to express pride in this accomplishment, stating, “We delivered the last system of our Bayraktar TB2 UCAVs to Poland. Thus, for the first time in Turkey’s history, we have successfully completed the export of high-tech UCAVs to both a NATO and EU member country.”

This delivery not only strengthens Poland’s defense but also marks a significant achievement for Turkey in the international defense market.

The TB2 Drone: A Game Changer

The Bayraktar TB2 is a medium-altitude, long-endurance drone known for its versatility in modern combat. It can perform reconnaissance, identify targets for artillery, and carry out precision strikes. One of its standout features is its advanced avionic suite, which enables autonomous taxiing, takeoff, landing, and cruising.

The TB2 gained international recognition when Ukrainian forces used it effectively against Russian troops early in the conflict. Given the ongoing war in Ukraine, the question arises whether Poland will share any of these drones with Ukraine to aid in their defense efforts.

Strategic Implications

Poland’s acquisition of these drones underscores the growing reliance on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in military strategy. The ability to conduct surveillance and precision strikes remotely provides a significant tactical advantage, reducing risks to human pilots and allowing for more flexible operations.

The completion of this deal also strengthens the defense ties between Poland and Turkey, both NATO members, and showcases the technological advancements Turkey has made in the defense sector.
