AI-Powered Drones Set to Revolutionize Inventory Management at IKEA’s US Warehouse

IKEA is bringing its cutting-edge to the , with plans to deploy AI-upgraded inventory drones at its Perryville, distribution center. This move marks a significant expansion of IKEA’s automated stock-counting system, which has already been successfully implemented across , reports The Verge.

24/7 Operation Alongside Human Workers

The new Verity-branded drones are equipped with advanced , allowing them to operate around the clock alongside human employees. This represents a major upgrade from previous versions, which were limited to flying during off-hours.

“Flights are pre-scheduled, and the drones use a custom indoor positioning system to navigate higher levels of storage locations,” explains Parag Parekh, IKEA Retail’s chief digital officer.

The drones also feature obstacle detection capabilities, enabling them to reroute and avoid collisions.

Expanding Capabilities

IKEA’s drone fleet currently consists of over 250 units operating in 73 warehouses across nine . The company launched its drone system in partnership with Verity in 2021, steadily expanding its reach throughout Europe.

These aerial assistants are designed to complement human workers by:

  1. Conducting inventory counts
  2. Identifying misplaced items
  3. Reducing ergonomic strain on employees

IKEA is also developing additional functionalities, including the ability to inspect unit loads and storage racks.
