Fullerton College Pioneers First West Coast Drone Bachelor’s Degree Program

A groundbreaking development in drone is taking shape at Fullerton College, where the institution is set to launch its first-ever bachelor’s degree program. The Bachelor of Science in Drone and Autonomous Systems, scheduled to begin in fall 2026, marks a significant milestone as the first program of its kind on the West Coast.

The announcement came during a special campus event on December 3, 2024, complete with a fitting demonstration. Program chair Jay Seidel, who has successfully led the college’s initiatives, emphasized the transformative nature of the industry:

Drones and autonomous systems are revolutionizing and transforming industries. This new baccalaureate degree is a testament to our commitment to innovation and providing our students with the skills needed for the jobs of tomorrow.”

The program builds upon Fullerton College’s established success in , which already includes two associate degrees and four specialized certificates. What sets this bachelor’s program apart is its comprehensive approach to the , focusing on managerial and operational perspectives beyond basic pilot training.

Current partnerships showcase the practical applications of the program, with students engaging in real-world projects such as monitoring marine life with the Pacific Marine Mammal Center and conducting research with Cal State Long Beach’s Shark Lab. These hands-on experiences demonstrate the versatile applications of drone technology in various fields.

The career prospects for graduates appear promising, with opportunities spanning project management, construction supervision, technical repair, and operational safety. Notable employers of current associate degree graduates include major organizations like SoCal Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric, and defense technology company .
