Chinese Tourist Released After Drone Filming Near South Korean Spy Agency
A Chinese national was briefly detained and then released after allegedly filming South Korea‘s National Intelligence Service (NIS) headquarters with a drone in Seoul. The incident, reported by Yonhap News, occurred when the tourist was attempting to capture footage of nearby historical sites.
Innocent Tourist or Security Concern?
The man, who’s in his 40s, was caught by Polisi while operating a drone near the NIS building in southern Seoul’s Seocho District. He was initially detained for violating the Aviation Safety Act but was released after questioning revealed his intentions appeared to be touristic rather than malicious.
“The suspect was released last night after a preliminary determination was made that he could not be linked to communist charges,” explained a police official during a press briefing.
Historical Sites Were the Real Target
The tourist claimed he was actually trying to capture footage of the Heolleung and Illeung Royal Tombs, which are significant Joseon Dynasty burial grounds located near the intelligence agency’s headquarters. Supporting his story, investigators found that he’d headed directly to the tombs in a rented car after arriving at Incheon International Airport.
Ongoing Investigation
While the man has been released, he’s currently under a travel ban as police continue their investigation. The tourist expressed his intentions were purely recreational, telling authorities he had plans to film other temples and heritage sites throughout South Korea.
DroneXL’s Take
This incident highlights the growing intersection between drone incidents and sensitive security locations. While drones offer incredible opportunities for tourism and aerial photography, operators must be aware of restricted areas and no-fly zones. The careful handling of this case by South Korean authorities shows how important it is to balance security concerns with legitimate drone use for tourism and cultural documentation.
