Optical Zoom Possibility

Interestingly, in a separate conversation we have had, an industry insider (Mr. L.) suggested the DJI Mavic 4 Pro might feature a 12-70mm optical zoom lens instead of three separate lenses/cameras. If true, this could explain the bulky circular camera gimbal setup seen in leaked DJI Mavic 4 Pro prototype images – possibly a decoy concealing a single camera with an optical zoom lens. Such a zoom lens, combined with dual native ISO and internal electronic ND , would make the DJI Mavic 4 Pro a drone with a truly game-changing feature set.

DroneXL’s Take

The potential combination of an optical zoom lens with internal electronic ND filters and dual native ISO could make the Mavic 4 Pro a very compelling alternative to the DJI Inspire 3. While the Inspire 3 would still offer interchangeable prime lenses for specialized work, the Mavic 4 Pro could be the ultimate all-in-one solution for most professional aerial photographers and videographers. These features align with DJI’s history of innovation in drone technology.

The mention of a Hasselblad ten-point starburst capability is particularly intriguing, as it suggests DJI is pushing beyond Hasselblad’s traditional eight-point starburst effect. Traditionally, Hasselblad cameras paired with XCD lenses are renowned for creating distinctive eight-point starbursts when capturing bright light sources at narrow apertures. This effect, achieved through precise leaf shutter blade design, has become a hallmark of Hasselblad’s imaging system, especially in their compact, fast XCD lenses. If DJI has indeed managed to engineer a ten-point starburst effect while maintaining Hasselblad’s signature image quality, it would represent a significant advancement in drone camera technology.

However, some skepticism is warranted regarding the rumored 12-70mm zoom lens. Looking at traditional camera systems, 24-70mm zoom lenses are already substantial in size and weight. Consider and Canon’s 28-70mm f/2 zoom lenses, which are particularly large and heavy due to their complex optical designs. For DJI to incorporate a 12-70mm zoom range with internal ND filters in a drone-mounted camera would require some remarkable engineering that seems to defy current optical physics limitations. While DJI has consistently pushed technological boundaries, this particular specification might be more wishful thinking than reality.

What do you think about these rumored specifications? Could this be a real feature list, or is it more of a drone wishlist? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
