Drones deployed to search for stranded hikers after a mudslide on Colorado Rockies trail
Dozens of hikers were trapped by a mudslide on a popular Colorado Rockies trail, and “boulders the size of small refrigerators” blocked a nearby road, reports the Mercury News.
The mudslide happened around 2 PM on Monday during a rainstorm in the area of Bridal Veil Falls, above the town of Telluride
More than two dozen people walked out without assistance, while other hikers were directed to an open roadway by San Miguel County sheriff’s deputies.
While county workers cleared mud and rocks, the Bridal Veil Falls Trail, Bridal Veil Road, Imogene Pass, and the Via Ferrata cliff route were closed. All trails were reopened by 10 AM on Tuesday.
To search for stranded hikers, drones were deployed. The Sheriff’s Office said in an update at 5:45 PM that 40 people had safely left the area and nobody was thought to be missing.
