New Mavic 3 unlikely to be released before the summer of 2021

Back in August, we wrote that the new Mavic 3 would be delayed ‘until Trump is gone,’ based on information from inside the drone maker. Now, we have learned that even if President Trump leaves the office, the new Mavic 3 is unlikely to be released before the summer of 2021. Why? Well, keep reading.

When we wrote that the new Mavic 3 would be delayed ‘until Trump is gone,’ DJI responded with the following:

“There have been no plans to launch such a product this summer, and we do most certainly not schedule or reschedule product releases according to political events, in the US or elsewhere in the world.”

At the time, we said that it seemed unlikely for a drone maker that sells so many of its products in the U.S. to not factor in changes in the political climate.

Today, however, we have learned that there is another reason that causes DJI to move slowly when it comes to the introduction of the Mavic 3 drone.

Upcoming changes in drone regulations have caused DJI to delay all development work on the Mavic 3. The most important piece of the regulatory puzzle is Remote ID for Drones, the details of which should be finalized by the end of this year, according to Administrator Steve Dickson from the 連邦航空局(FAA).

From our source:

DJI will NOT release the M3 until the FAA finalized their regulations. In fact, DJI actually stopped all engineering on the M3 BEFORE it was production-ready with final prototypes in case they had to retool for a broadcast signal. So even once DJI decides they are a go, they STILL have at least 4-6 months of development.

Only when DJI knows the exact specifications and requirements of for Drones, they will go forward with the development, production, and launch of this eagerly awaited drone.

This means that if the FAA finalizes Remote ID for Drones by the end of 2020, we are very likely at least another six months away from a product launch. so, unfortunately, we do not expect to see a new until sometime next summer.

  1. I hate this!!! Constantly getting people’s hopes up then crashing them. I wanted a Phantom 5. For two years people said it was coming. No dice. Then everyone says a new Mavic 3 in Jan 2020. Then June. Then you say September. Then Jan 2021. And now you’re saying summer of 2021. Just say you have no idea and your guesses are meaningless.

    • Totally understand your frustration. We try to report as accurately as we can, based on the information that is available to us at that point in time. Things tend to change over time though. Remember the delayed launch of the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom?
