DJI develops self-driving capabilities with LiDAR technology

According to sources and job posts, Chinese drone maker DJI is working on self-driving capabilities with LIVOX LiDAR technology. Job posts and other sources indicate that the company is building an engineering team to achieve this.

DJI develops self-driving capabilities with LIVOX LiDAR technology

People familiar with DJI’s strategy say that the company putting together an engineering team to develop self-driving capabilities with the use of its LIVOX LiDAR system that was introduced about one year ago.

Job openings on its website show that the drone maker is hiring engineers for auto electronics, autonomous driving, and in-car software. Reuters reports that three people said DJI plans to sell driver-assist technology such as LiDAR sensors, a key component in self-driving cars, and packaged solutions for autonomous driving functions.

DJI did not confirm or deny the news and instead said that the company had no new announcements to make at the moment.

DJI has been working on LiDAR technology for years and introduced its LiVOX business division roughly 12 months ago. The LIVOX technology is expected to be used on electric vehicles from Chinese car manufacturer Xpeng Inc.
