It only took six minutes for a drone to deliver lungs to a hospital in Toronto, Canada. According to the health network, the successful and speedy delivery of the organs was the world’s first.

The successful drone delivery of lungs to a hospital in Toronto was the world’s first, according to University Health Network and Unither Bioelectronique.

CBC News reported that according to the Toronto-based healthcare organization and a bioengineering firm in Bromont, Quebec, the drone transporting the lungs flew from Toronto Western Hospital to Toronto General Hospital. The Delivery by Drone took place on September 25th and only took six minutes. The flight was successfully completed at 1 am local time.

Dr. Shaf Keshavjee, head surgeon at UHN, says the receiver was a male engineer with an interest in unmanned aircraft, and the transplant went smoothly.

The Toronto General Hospital was selected by Unither Bioelectronique to be a part of the historic occasion since it performed the world’s first lung transplant in 1983 and the first double lung transplant in 1986.

The world’s first delivery of lungs by drone comes as drone startups are racing to make drone deliveries a common practice. Over the last year or so we have seen a human kidney being successfully transported this way over the Las Vegas desert. More recently another kidney was also transported by drone in Maryland.
