DJI Mavic 3 Gets 4 New Cameras Through Firmware Update

Today, we’re checking out a brand new Firmware Update for the DJI Mavic 3 lineup of drones. We have some new features being added to the entire lineup, and then we have features that are specific to the Mavic 3 Pro. I’m really excited about all these new changes, so let’s get straight into it.

DJI Mavic 3 Vision Assist

Starting with the most important feature, which is called “Vision Assist.” Vision Assist is something that is so simple, but it absolutely blew my mind the first time I saw it. I have no idea why it wasn’t implemented earlier, but it makes so much sense, and I genuinely love it.

Vision Assist is a feature that enables the vision sensors of the drones. As we all know, the DJI Mavic 3 has omnidirectional obstacle avoidance with sensors all around the drone. Now, the drone can use these sensors in black and white to show you a real-time picture of what it sees outside of the camera.

With a simple swipe on the map, you can enable Vision Assist, and you’ll see a black-and-white image from one of the sensors around the drone. There are four arrows: one on the top, bottom, left, and right. You can cycle between them to see different views around the drone, which is spectacular.

A great example of when Vision Assist is useful is when you’re using the 3x or the 7x camera and performing a semi-circle around a building. Especially when zoomed in with these lenses, you lose peripheral vision.

Thus, it’s easier to accidentally hit an obstacle, like a tree, during the movement. Now, you can enable Vision Assist from the settings to ensure you don’t crash.

DJI Mavic 3 Augmented Reality

The next new features in this firmware update revolve around augmented reality, or AR. First, we have “AR Return to Home.” With this feature enabled in the settings, you can see the exact path the drone will take to return to its home point. Once you activate this and press the return to home button, the drone will beep, and you’ll see a green path indicating its route.

Additionally, the home point is now displayed in augmented reality as “AR Home Point.” While you fly, it appears as a small “H” on the screen, making it easier to locate and reducing disorientation.

Another AR feature is “AR Aircraft Shadow.” This shows an AR representation of the drone’s shadow as you approach a landing position. The “shadow” enlarges as you get closer to the ground, helping ensure your landing spot is safe.

From this firmware, we also have “Frame Guide.” This feature offers different framing possibilities for specific platforms, like Instagram. For instance, if you’re shooting for a 9×16 or 4×5 format, you can activate the Frame Guide to see those dimensions. These are merely guides and won’t affect your actual footage.

Another addition is the “Land Protection Switch,” especially useful when flying through fog or over clouds. Sometimes the vision positioning system hesitates when descending through clouds. While this switch is somewhat hidden in the settings and should be used with caution, it can be handy in situations like landing on a moving boat.

Specifically, for the Mavic 3 Pro そして Mavic 3 Pro Cine, the 7x lens now supports 10-bit video and can shoot in D-Log and HLG. This change addresses previous limitations, ensuring more consistent video quality across lenses. Furthermore, the 3x medium telephoto camera now supports Night Mode, Video Master Shots, Quick Shots, and Spherical Panorama.
