DJI Mavic 3 Series Firmware Update – It Can Do WHAT?!

Wait, what? The sensor is a camera? No way! I didn’t even know that was possible. The latest firmware update for the DJI Mavic 3 Series has some brand-new features that we have never seen on a drone before.
There’s one feature that I had no idea was even possible. But first, let’s talk about the most important enhancement for the Mavic 3 Pro, in my opinion. That’s the ability to capture 10-bit D-Log M and HLG video with the 7x tele-zoom camera.
Now, you can more easily match the video footage from a scene you recorded with the wide-angle lens, the 3x tele-zoom, the medium tele-zoom, and the 7x. There’s more consistency now.
I know this was an issue many videographers were frustrated with because, previously you had to edit them differently. But now, they have finally resolved it. It’s a very welcome feature.
Being able to capture all angles in the same profile will make all of your footage more consistent, and it also makes post-production much more efficient, if you ask me. If you own the Mavic 3 Pro and you aren’t recording in D-Log M, you’re really missing out. It’s so easy to edit. I know many people are intimidated by it, but now, being able to record with all three cameras is very cool.

Another addition is that the 3x, the medium tele-camera, now supports MasterShots, QuickShots, and has the ability to capture spherical panoramas.
As for the MasterShots and QuickShots, it’s pretty cool being able to capture beginner-type shots with the 3x camera. The 3x allows for a parallax effect where the background appears closer to your subject, presenting more movement.

Regarding spherical panoramas and capturing tiny planets, I didn’t even know I couldn’t do that before since it’s not something I use regularly. But if you enjoy recording tiny planets or shooting 360-degree photos to share on social media, you can now do that with the 3x camera.
I tried it, and for some reason, it takes 106 images. When I attempted to edit them together in Lightroom, I couldn’t figure it out. I need to learn how to combine those 106 images into one. Like I mentioned, it’s not a feature I’d use often, and I doubt many others would. But the feature is there if you’re interested.
DJI Mavic 3 firmware update brings Vision Assist
Those are two significant zoom camera upgrades on the Mavic 3 Pro. But let’s discuss the most intriguing new feature: Vision Assist.
Vision Assist uses the obstacle avoidance sensors as cameras that display a black-and-white image, providing greater situational awareness when flying.
All you have to do is tap on the lower right corner of the attitude indicator, located in the lower left of your screen. This action brings up the sensor cameras, and then you can choose to view the left, right, forward, or backward sensor views. If you wish to lock the current view, hold down the arrow briefly.
To unlock, tap the arrow again. In addition, the attitude indicator also displays the proximity of obstacles with orange or red lines, allowing you to gauge distance.
Now, you have multiple ways to monitor obstacles when flying: the beeper, the heads-up display, the attitude indicator, and the obstacle avoidance camera view.
As I said, I had no clue this was possible, so I’m blown away by this feature. But then again, it doesn’t take much to surprise me.
DJI Mavic 3 Firmware Update Introduces AR
Next, all three Mavic drones now have an AR Return to Home route. This feature is a green arrow that appears when you hit the Return to Home button, or if it initiates by itself. It shows the exact path the drone will take to return to the home point.
Speaking of the home point, we now have a virtual Home Point indicator showing a little “H” on the screen. We’ve seen this on enterprise drones, but it’s great to have it on a consumer series.
It’s useful if you ever change your home point or forget where you set it. Another addition, though minor, is the AR Aircraft Shadow feature. It displays the drone’s precise landing location as a shadow on the ground as the drone descends. The last safety feature added is the Land Protection Switch.

This switch allows you to disable the pause your Mavic 3 takes before landing. While this sounds unsafe, it’s useful when landing on moving subjects, like boats. However, be cautious—if the landing protector is turned off and you lower your drone too rapidly, you could crash it.
The last feature in this Firmware Update for the Mavic 3 Series is called Frame Guide. It places shadows on your display screen to help with composition. This doesn’t crop your video. The file remains the same size; the shadows are just for reference.
They have several frames to choose from, and the purpose is to assist in the editing process. So, there you have it—the latest firmware updates to the Mavic 3 Series.
There are some remarkable features, especially the safety ones. I believe the Vision Assist will be the talk of the town. But, as I mentioned, I think the D-Log M on the 7x camera is the most significant and useful upgrade.
