North Korean Counter-Drone Tactics Reveal Outdated Approach to Modern Warfare

A recovered tactical notebook from a North Korean casualty in ‘s Kursk region has exposed surprisingly primitive counter-drone methods, highlighting the growing challenges traditional forces face against modern unmanned aerial systems. The document, found on a soldier identified as Jong Kyong Hong, details a basic three-person approach to downing Ukrainian drones according to RFA.org.

The tactical approach described in the notebook relies on what Ukrainian forces characterize as “living human bait” – a method where one soldier attempts to draw a drone’s attention while two others position themselves for a shot. This rudimentary technique requires the forward soldier to maintain approximately 23 feet of distance from the drone while two supporting troops prepare to engage from 32-40 feet away.

“When the person luring the drone stands still, the drone will also stop, making it possible for the two to aim and shoot it down,” the note said.

The revelation comes amid reports from ‘s National Intelligence Service indicating significant North Korean casualties from Ukrainian drone operations. The intelligence agency noted that North Korean troops are particularly vulnerable in open field environments, lacking both the equipment and tactical knowledge to effectively counter modern drone threats.

Federico Borsari, a resident fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis, points out that North Korean forces have shown particular vulnerability to First Person View (FPV) drones. These systems, which provide operators with real-time video feeds, have proven especially effective against troops lacking adequate counter-drone equipment and proper concealment techniques.

The Defence Intelligence of (DIU) reports that North Korean units have attempted to adapt by establishing additional observation posts for drone detection. However, these modifications appear to be reactive measures following substantial losses rather than part of a comprehensive counter-drone strategy.

These developments highlight several critical aspects of modern drone warfare:

  • The effectiveness of consumer-grade against conventional forces lacking counter-UAS capabilities
  • The significant tactical advantage provided by thermal imaging in drone operations, particularly in adverse weather conditions
  • The challenges traditional military doctrine faces when confronting modern unmanned systems

The situation in Kursk has become a stark demonstration of how conventional military tactics can fail against modern drone warfare. Ukrainian forces’ successful use of both surveillance and attack drones against North Korean troops underscores the critical importance of developing effective counter-drone capabilities in contemporary military operations.

This incident also raises broader questions about the future of infantry tactics in an era of increasingly prevalent drone warfare. As unmanned systems become more sophisticated, the need for advanced counter-drone strategies and equipment becomes increasingly critical for ground forces operating in modern conflicts.
