Teledyne FLIR launches SIRAS drone with both thermal and optical zoom camera

Teledyne FLIR is a well-known name in the world of thermal inspections. In the past, the company also supplied thermal imaging cameras to drone manufacturers. With the introduction of SIRAS, Teledyne FLIR is taking a different tack, and the company will now supply drones to professional users. The first model has both a thermal and optical zoom camera.

With the SIRAS drone – an abbreviation of Secure Infrared Aerial System – Teledyne FLIR targets users in various demanding sectors, including fire service, , inspection, and security. They generally need both an optical camera (preferably with a zoom) in combination with a thermal imager, for example to detect fires or locate missing persons at night.

With the SIRAS, these user groups are served according to their wishes. For example, the SIRAS has a Vue TV128 radiometric camera based on a Boson sensor with a resolution of 640 x 512 pixels. The digital zoom range of this thermal imager is 5x. The RGB camera has a resolution of 16 megapixels and can zoom in up to 128x. The payload is interchangeable for future applications.

According to Teledyne FLIR, the SIRAS is currently the only Enterprise drone with the patented MSX technology. Details as recorded in the visual spectrum are superimposed over the thermographic images. In this way, the user gets a better picture of the situation, which is especially important for inspection work.

Data security

One aspect that Teledyne FLIR places extra emphasis on is . For example, the drone does not make contact with servers in the cloud. Pilots do not have to create an online profile before they can fly. Images are stored on an onboard SD card and not shared to the cloud.

Remarkable is Teledyne FLIR’s choice not to equip the drone with geofencing technology. This means that the drone can in principle, take off anywhere, including near airports and in no-fly zones. It is up to the user to decide whether or not to fly. It is not necessary to request a geo zone unlock first, as with DJI.

Compact and foldable

The drone has a collapsible design and can be folded into a compact package, small enough to fit in a backpack. The supplied smart controller has a built-in display and makes contact with the drone via a 2.4 and 5.8 GHz radio connection. The system can be made ready for use within a minute.

The drone has an IP-54 rating (dust and waterproof) and can fly for approximately 31 minutes. The batteries are hot-swappable, so the drone does not have to be switched off during a battery change. For safety, the drone provides a forward-facing radar for obstacle detection.

Price and availability of the Teledyne FLIR drone

The SIRAS has been given a price tag of $ 9,695 in the US. It is still unclear whether the drone will also be available in the EU in the short term and what the sales price will be.

Teledyne FLIR claims it can compete well with with this pricing:

“Currently, China-based companies dominate the global industrial drone market but are increasingly seen as unreliable when it comes to privacy and data security. SIRAS delivers the information security and options that customers in North America and need, but at a price at the level of China-based drone makers.”

The SIRAS is not completely ‘Made in America’, by the way. The production of the drone has been outsourced to Coretronic Intelligent Robotics Corporation in Taiwan. The payload is then mounted in the US, after which the final quality control also takes place in the US.
