DJI FPV camera shows up in patent. Will DJI finally release an FPV drone?

Today we see drawings from a new showing what seems to be a new DJI FPV camera. Will DJI finally release its own as well? Let’s take a closer look.

DJI FPV camera shows up in patent

Last year during the summer, DJI released its DJI Digital FPV System that allows you to build your own FPV drone with DJI components installed to allow for HD video transmission instead of a traditional analog system. The obvious question at the time was; why did DJI not release a DJI FPV drone as well? Followed up by; when will DJI release its own FPV drone?

Well, today something interesting was shared by @OsitaLV from the Chinese patent database and it shows what we think is a new DJI camera for . As you can see in the drawings it shows a camera build into a protective case that we think is meant to be installed on an FPV drone. The camera angle is adjustable to fit your custom-built FPV drone. The cut-out right above the camera itself is an indication of this as well as the way the camera is mounted in the protective case as it allows you to adjust the angle. Looking closer at the drawings it might even be a servo-powered system that adjusts depending on how fast you fly.

Some people have speculated that this camera might be for the RoboMaster. We do not think that is the case.

So, back to the main question, we posed earlier; will DJI launch its own FPV drone, and if so when? Recently we have seen DJI discount its FPV system and we know that the Chinese drone maker is getting ready to launch a new product this summer.

Dji Patent Shows New Fpv Camera. Will Dji Finally Release An Fpv Drone?

We think that there are three likely candidates for this release:

Let’s start with the first one.

A DJI FPV drone

We are not sure DJI will launch a DJI FPV drone. Part of what makes FPV drones so much fun is that the customization options are almost endless. Many FPV pilots build their own drones and make them specifically fit their needs. The variation of FPV drones seems to be so wide that it might be hard for DJI to come up with one specific style of FPV drone that will make most FPV pilots happy. It might be easier, and better business practice, to simply supply components that can be used in a custom-built FPV drone, and that bring improvements over previous systems as DJI has done with the Digital DJI FPV System. The fact that these patent drawings show an adjustable FPV camera, we think, is an indication that it can be mounted on almost any FPV drone. If it was meant to be mounted on a specific DJI FPV drone, DJI would likely have incorporated the camera into the overall design of the FPV drone to improve stability, reduce weight, etc. and thus it would not have looked like this and there would not have been a need for adjusting the angle of view. So, no, we do not believe that these patent drawings indicate the arrival of a DJI drone any time soon.

A Digital DJI FPV System 2.0

This we feel is a more likely scenario. First off, DJI has been discounting the Digital DJI FPV System which might indicate that a newer improved version might be on the way. Secondly, as I mentioned above, we feel that this camera is meant to be installed on a variety of FPV drones as it can be adjusted to fit your drone. Using DJI’s knowledge and experience of cameras and video transmission systems, we think this new DJI FPV Camera may be part of the next step in improving their Digital FPV System that would provide an even better digital video feed with even less latency. And, as we said before it might be servo-powered and auto-adjust its angle depending on how fast you fly. And, maybe this new camera would be able to provide a digital video feed to the pilot as well as record the footage in 4K at the same time, and by doing so eliminate the need to mount a separate or GoPro Hero 8 to record the footage? That would be nice.

DJI Mavic 3

The third option for a possible DJI product release this summer would of course (and hopefully) be a new DJI Mavic 3. We have heard a number of rumors and it seems that a new Mavic 3 is surely on its way. However, as far as we know, DJI has not yet decided on the exact date of the release. It might be this summer. It might be later this year. As soon as we learn more, we will share it with you asap on DroneXl. Keep in mind though that launching a new Digital DJI FPV System 2.0 and a new DJI Mavic 3 is not an either/or situation. They might do both in short succession which would definitely be good news! And, just to be clear, we do NOT expect this camera to be part of the Mavic 3.

DroneXL’s take on the DJI FPV camera

Of course, new patent drawings do not always indicate that a new product is on the way. Sometimes parents are merely used to protect ideas that may or may not be used in future products. However, these drawings are more interesting than that and we feel that we might actually see this camera make it to production.

Let us know what you think these new DJI patent drawings show us and what you think might happen this summer in terms of new DJI product launches. We’re curious to hear your thoughts.

  1. Digital DJI FPV System 2.0 will not happen this year, DJI cycle is not every year but every 2 years, so there will be no Digital DJI FPV System 2.0 this year
