Rivian’s Flaming Pursuit Captured in Stunning Drone Video

In the realm of drone videography, innovative feats continue to emerge. Recently, a particularly creative effort featured a DJI Inspire 3 drone capturing footage of a Rivian electric SUV pursued by an FPV drone with a flare attached.

The man behind the operation, drone pilot and filmmaker Nathan McBride published the video on Instagram. He emphasized that no computer animation was involved, stating, “No, these are not special effects. This shot was part of a concept for a spec piece for Rivian, led by Zeppelin Zeerip and Josh Finbow. An amazing crew of talented people worked for 6 hours on this shot, and we’re super excited about the result.”

McBride utilized the new for the shot, noting its suitability for twilight filming due to its light-sensitive Zenmuse X9 Air camera, which can shoot at a dual native ISO of 4000.

He shared that the recording was a “Dual operation shot done by Nathan McBride and Colby Elliot,” and the FPV drone was expertly maneuvered by another operator known as Lukabees, aka Luke Bredar.

This high-adrenaline drone chase sequence showcases the exciting potential for creative collaborations between and filmmaking. By taking drone videography to new heights, McBride and his team have proven what’s possible when innovation, talent, and a bit of flare come together.

  1. It’s a great practical effect, and nice footage off the Ins3, BUT. Using a lit flare in that environment when you still need to do a load of digital effects to remove the FPV’s shadow etc is a major safety risk. It would have been a lot safer to use digital effects to do the fireball.
