Montgomery County Expands Innovative Drone as First Responder Program

The Montgomery County Department (MCPD) is set to brief officials on their expanding Program, which has grown from a pilot project to include multiple operational sites across the county, according to a recent Montgomery County announcement.

Program Growth and Implementation

Originally launched as a pilot program in FY2024, the drone initiative has proven successful enough to warrant expansion. The program deploys unmanned aircraft systems to assess emergency situations before officers arrive on scene, providing crucial real-time intelligence that enhances officer and public safety.

Real-Time Intelligence Integration

The drone program operates in conjunction with MCPD’s Real Time Intelligence Center, which was established using American Rescue Plan Act funding. The center utilizes Axon Fusus software to integrate various surveillance technologies, including the MoCoConnect voluntary camera registration program.

New Locations and Extended Hours

Following the successful pilot phase that ran through June 30, 2024, the program has secured funding for expansion in the FY25 Operating Budget. The expansion includes extended operational hours in Silver Spring and Wheaton, along with new operational sites in Bethesda. The Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village site has already begun operations as of October, marking a significant milestone in the program’s growth.

DroneXL’s Take

As we continue to see the integration of drones in public safety, Montgomery County’s expansion represents a growing trend in first responder drone operations. The program’s success mirrors what we’re seeing across the country, where drones are becoming an invaluable tool for law enforcement, providing crucial situational awareness while potentially reducing response times and increasing officer safety.
