Volunteer pilotos de drones use their unmanned aircraft outfitted with thermal cameras to help save the lives of hundreds of young deer, or fawns, in a number of European Countries, such as Switzerland and Norway.

the young deer are left behind by their mothers in tall grass, a perfect hiding spot, as they haven’t developed their flight response yet. However, with the start of the mowing season, the lives of these young animals are in grave danger.

In Germany alone, it is estimated that over 100,000 young deer die every year from large agricultural mowers that cut their way through meadows and tall grass.

With the help of drones with thermal cameras large areas and meadows can quickly be screened for any young deer that might be hiding. It takes less than five minutes to scan over two acres of grassland by drone.

These drone flights are best done early in the morning when the temperature difference it that greatest between the fawn and the surrounding area.

According to Pledge Times, drones helped to rescue 40 fawns in Bavaria within three days. And in the Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden over 60 young deer were saved within one week.
