Tulsa Fire Department Makes History with Largest-Ever Drone Response to Chemical Fire
The Tulsa Fire Department (TFD) deployed its most extensive drone operation to date, utilizing seven simultaneous drones to combat a dangerous petroleum tank farm fire at AXEL Royal facility in West Tulsa. This groundbreaking emergency response showcased the department’s advanced drone capabilities and highlighted Tulsa’s growing prominence in the Setor de drones, reports local news outlet KTUL.
Revolutionary Drone Response Strategy
In a first-of-its-kind approach, TFD implemented a fixed-location Skydio drone station at the Gathering Place, enabling continuous monitoring of smoke plumes across the river. This innovative deployment was made possible by a pioneering FAA waiver granted to the department just three weeks prior, allowing them to use domestic Tecnologia de drones while maintaining national airspace safety.
“Capabilities like this allow for a quicker and safer response to scenes and allow us to serve our citizens more efficiently,” TFD stated in their Facebook announcement.
The operation involved not only multiple aircraft but also eight pilots of varying experience levels coordinating the response.
Tulsa’s Drone Capital Aspirations
This successful deployment comes at a pivotal moment as Mayor GT Bynum prepares to announce ambitious plans to establish Tulsa as the world’s drone capital. The city’s vision leverages extensive educational partnerships with local colleges and universities, alongside significant tribal involvement.
The initiative has gained momentum through substantial economic development efforts and the establishment of a dedicated Blue Ribbon Commission. Further support comes from Tulsa Innovation Labs, which has committed significant investment to advancing the region’s aerial mobility capabilities.
DroneXL’s Take
This groundbreaking deployment by the Tulsa Fire Department represents a significant milestone in first responder drone operations. The successful integration of multiple Skydio drones in an emergency response scenario demonstrates the growing importance of drone technology in public safety applications. The combination of innovative FAA waivers and municipal support could serve as a model for other cities looking to expand their drone programs, particularly in the realm of BVLOS operations.
