DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro FOV Boost Lens Changes Your Perspective
Good day folks, Shawn here from Air Photography. Just another quick video for you today where we’re going to look at the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro and the new Osmo Action Field of View Boost lens. This new Boost lens can increase your field of view up to 182°. According to DJI, increasing video width by 26% and height by 24%. This new Boost lens is going to be great for those capturing point-of-view shots such as riding a bike, selfies, if you’re skiing or activities like that, and you want more field of view in the shot. This is going to be a nice little addition.

Installation and Protection
Essentially all you have to do is remove the protective lens cover. When you purchase it, it does come with this silicone case to keep the lens protected, so you just have to pull the back off and then screw it in. As you can see there it is. You just have to be careful when using it as it is a fisheye lens, so it does stick out. You definitely want to be careful while using it. It’s kind of nice when you’re not using it – you can just put that cover back on and that will keep the lens protected if you put this in a bag or something.
Field of View Comparison
Let’s go ahead here and we’re going to take a look at some footage. This first shot is shot in ultrawide just with the Action 5 Pro. The Boost lens is not installed. Shooting in Ultra wide without the Boost lens, you’re going to get about 155° field of view, and it’s a nice wide field of view and looks pretty good.
Now in this shot, we’ve got the Boost lens installed, we’ve set it to ultrawide as well, and you can see you can get a lot more in the image, and it’s just going to look better for some activities.
Side-by-Side Analysis
So now here I’ll play them side by side, and that way you can get a feel of the difference in field of view. As you seen in the sample, it does increase the field of view quite a bit. Now I’m going to show you another sample here – I just have it on a tripod, and that way you can get a better look at the field of view increase. On the left hand side is the Action 5 in Ultra wide without the Boost lens, so that’s at 155° field of view, and on the right hand side we have the Action 5 Pro with the Boost lens enabled, set to ultra wide as well, and you can see that it is quite a bit wider when it comes to the field of view.
Settings Configuration
When you have the Boost lens installed, you do have to enable it in the settings. We just go over to the main settings here, scroll down, you can see we have an option called Boost lens. We do have to turn that on – we’ll hit enable, and that’s just going to make sure everything functions the way it should. In order to do that, you will have to update the firmware on the Action 5 Pro. There was a firmware about 3 weeks ago, two weeks ago that enabled the feature for the Boost lens. I don’t know if you can see it on camera there, but when we have it enabled, we get a little icon on the screen just so we know that it is turned on.
Available Modes
When the Boost lens is enabled, you can see we have two fields of view that we could set: we can set wide and we can set Ultra wide. For stabilization, it gives us rock steady and Horizon balancing.
Waterproofing and Limitations
According to DJI, when the Boost lens is installed, the camera is still waterproof up to 5m, but on their page, it does state that using the Boost lens underwater can introduce a lot of distortion, so it is not recommended to use while filming underwater.
Compatibility
The Boost lens is only compatible with the Action 5 Pro – it is not compatible with the Action 4 or the Action 3.
So yeah folks, just a quick look at the new Boost lens for the Osmo Action 5 Pro. Hopefully you found this video had value – give it a thumbs up if you did, it’s always greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot for watching, and we’ll see you in the next one.
