DJI Flip Drone Review: Features, Performance, and Comparison

Today, we are going to review the DJI Flip, a brand-new drone model just released by DJI. This drone stands out with its unique design, built-in propeller guards, a new battery system, and an updated sensor. Let’s dive into the details and see what makes this drone different.
Key Features and Design
O DJI Flip introduces several new features that distinguish it from previous models. Notably, the way it folds and unfolds is slightly different from what we’re accustomed to. When unfolded, the drone automatically powers on if the battery is plugged in – a unique feature that gets you in the air quickly. In terms of weight, the DJI Flip is 249 grams, just like the Mini series. However, its flight time is slightly lower. For comparison, the Mini 4 Pro boasts a flight time of 34 minutes with smaller batteries, while the Flip is advertised at 31 minutes. During our tests, we’ll discuss how it performs in real-world scenarios.

Camera Capabilities
O DJI Flip comes equipped with a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor capable of 48MP or 12MP resolution. It also features a 4x digital zoom, though it only has one lens available. This is the same sensor size as the Mini 4 Pro, and we’ll provide comparisons of footage between the two.
Photography Modes
O Flip offers several photography modes for users:
- Single Mode: Standard photo capture.
- AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing): Captures up to seven pictures with different exposures.
- Burst Mode: Continuously captures photos while holding the shutter.
- Timed Shots: Takes photos at intervals.
Video Recording
For video, the Flip supports:
- 4K at 60 fps: With frame rates starting from 24 fps.
- 1080p at 24-60 fps: Offering flexibility for different filming needs.
- Vertical Video: 9:16 format for social media, up to 2.7K resolution.
Notably, the Flip uses cropping for vertical footage rather than physically rotating the camera (as seen in the Mini series). While this cropping approach works, it doesn’t provide the same field of view as a rotating camera.

Controllers and Controls
O DJI Flip offers several control options:
- No Controller: Fly the drone directly by toggling a button on the side. This mode is very limited and lacks features like Return to Home (RTH).
- Smartphone Control: Use your phone via the DJI Fly App. While convenient, this mode lacks tactile feedback and has limited range.
- RC-N3 Controller: The latest traditional controller from DJI, offering up to 3.5 hours of battery life.
- RC-N2 Controller: A model with an integrated screen for a more seamless experience.
Each controller provides a different level of functionality, with the RC-N2 offering the most user-friendly option.
Software and Flight Modes
O Flip includes DJI’s signature features:
- MasterShots: Automatically creates a cinematic sequence by selecting a subject and generating a final edited clip.
- QuickShots: Pre-programmed flight patterns like Drone, Helix, Rocket, and Circle.
- Hyperlapse: Creates time-lapse videos while the drone moves through the air.
- FocusTrack: Includes ActiveTrack 4.0, Spotlight 2.0, and Point of Interest 3.0 for tracking objects and subjects.
Additionally, the Flip introduces AI Track, a new software feature allowing enhanced object and people tracking.

Real-World Performance
Flight Time
The Flip’s advertised flight time is 31 minutes. In our tests at a density altitude of 6,900 feet, we achieved 25 minutes and 59 seconds (approximately 83% of the advertised duration). This aligns with typical results at higher altitudes. At lower altitudes, users can expect closer to 28–29 minutes.
Noise Levels
The Flip generates a noise level of:
- 70 dB at 10 feet away.
- 82 dB at 1 foot away.
The two-bladed propeller design inside the duct produces a less high-pitched sound compared to other drones, making it more tolerable for prolonged use.
Wind Performance
The Flip struggles in high winds due to its lightweight design and two-propeller system. It is not recommended for use in strong wind conditions, as it can easily be pushed off course.

Obstacle Detection
The Flip uses a TOF (Time-of-Flight) sensor for obstacle detection, which works well for objects with reflectivity over 10%. However, it cannot detect reflective surfaces like glass or water. Always fly cautiously, as this feature is not a substitute for manual control.
Built-In Prop Guards and Remote ID
The built-in propeller guards are a noteworthy feature, and the drone remains under 249 grams even with them attached. However, the lack of Remote ID is a significant drawback for Part 107 operators, as it prevents the Flip from being classified as a Category 1 drone. Recreational pilots, on the other hand, may appreciate the absence of Remote ID requirements.

Pricing and Comparison
O DJI Flip is available in three packages:
- Basic Package: $439 (Drone only).
- RC-N2 Bundle: $639 (Includes RC-N2 controller).
- Fly More Combo: $779 (Includes RC-N2 controller, charging hub, and additional batteries).
For comparison:
- O Mini 4 Pro costs $759 with the RC-N2 controller.
- O Mini 3 (non-Pro) costs $419 with the RC-N1 controller.
The Flip fills a gap in DJI’s lineup as an affordable entry-level drone. However, for users with a Mini series drone, the Flip does not offer significant upgrades.
Conclusão
The DJI Flip is an excellent choice for beginners or those looking for an affordable entry-level drone. While it introduces some unique design features, such as built-in prop guards and quick deployment, it falls short in areas like wind performance and Remote ID compliance. For those already owning a Mini series drone, the Flip may not be a worthwhile upgrade. However, for new users or recreational pilots, it offers a solid introduction to DJI’s drone ecosystem. If you’re curious to learn more, check out our in-depth Review for additional details.
