DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Phantom 4 Pro among the police drones used in Arizona

How the Arizona police use DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Phantom 4 Pro as police drones

Apart from high-end, expensive drones such as the Skyranger from Aeryon Labs, the drones that are most commonly used by the Arizona police are off-the-shelf DJI drones, such as the DJI Mavic 2 Pro и Phantom 4 Pro, but also the DJI Spark and DJI Inspire 1.

Based on information from the Federal Aviation Administration, nine different Arizona agencies, including some fire departments have drones at their disposal.

Сайт AZMirror also found that 17 drones were owned by the “State of Arizona,” and that most of them are of the DJI brand. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) acquired most of its drones in 2019, according to public records. In their fleet are DJI Mavic 2 Pro drones as well as DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise, Spark, and Inspire 1 drones. The DPS also has access to the Skyranger from Aeryon Labs (owned by FLIR Systems).

The DPS, currenlty has 22 пилоты беспилотников available to fly unmanned aircraft for the Aviation Bureau, VCU, HAZMAT, SWAT, Wireless Systems Bureau and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, according to a DPS spokesperson.

Tempe Police department uses a DJI Phantom 4 Pro

Most of the drones used are off-the-shelf consumer drone models such as the DJI Phantom 4 Pro that is used by the Tempe Police Department.

According to AZMirros, Tempe Police policy says that the drone is mainly to be used for technical rescues, hazardous situations, scene analysis, flooding, mass casualty events, Поиск и спасение, crime scene documentation, major event security, SWAT and tactical situations, and in any situation where there is an “active public safety concern.” The policy also stipulates that the drone “will not be deployed solely because people are choosing to exercise their right to free speech or their right to gather” and that “strong consideration must be given to a sUAS (small unmanned aerial system) deployment under these circumstances as it may agitate an otherwise law-abiding assembly of people.”
