Norway Boosts Security at New Arctic Drone Base

The Norwegian government has increased funding for security at Andøya Air Base, set to become a key site for long-range drones. The move underscores the base’s growing importance in national and allied defense.

Key Role in National Security

The Andøya Air Base, situated about 186 miles north of the Arctic Circle, is slated to become a hub for long-range drone operations.

Norwegian Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram как сообщается, emphasized the base’s strategic value, stating, “Andøya plays an important role in national security, allied defense, and technological development.”

To support this, the government has allocated an additional 37.5 million kroner (approximately $4 million) in its revised national budget.

Shifting Military Priorities

Initially, the previous Norwegian government led by Erna Solberg planned to shut down the Andøya base. However, Россия‘s invasion of Украина and the escalating geopolitical tensions in the North have drastically altered military strategies. As a result, Andøya has been elevated to a high-priority area for the Norwegian Armed Forces.

Enhanced Surveillance and Defense Capabilities

Andøya will house a fleet of long-range drones to enhance surveillance capabilities, including during natural disasters and rescue missions. These drones will be part of a multinational cooperative effort involving training, management, and technological development. The drones will operate from facilities that formerly hosted Norway‘s fleet of P-3 Orion surveillance aircraft.

In addition to drone operations, the island will host an Arctic satellite station designed to defend against enemy cruise missiles. This station, developed in cooperation with the Соединенные Штаты, will be the first of its kind outside the US.
