South Korea to Replace Traditional Mortars with FPV Drones in Military Overhaul

In a significant shift towards modern warfare technology, South Korea‘s military is planning to phase out conventional 60mm and 81mm mortars in favor of First Person View (FPV) drones, according to m.mt.
Drone-Centric Military Modernization
South Korea’s Army Chief of Staff Park An-su announced a comprehensive plan to restructure their mortar units into what they’re calling “Dronebot (Drone/Robot) Company.” The transformation aims to enhance their capabilities with weapons that can reach targets up to 10 kilometers away.
“We are currently planning to rearm mortar units with drones,” Park stated during his address to the National Defense Committee of the National Assembly.
Why Drones Over Mortars?
The switch from traditional mortars to drones makes practical sense. Current 60mm mortars weigh around 44 pounds (20 kg), while 81mm mortars exceed 88 pounds (40 kg). These conventional weapons have an effective range of only 2-3 kilometers. In contrast, drones offer increased accuracy, require fewer personnel for operation, and are significantly easier to transport and deploy.
Broader Military Transformation
The drone integration isn’t happening in isolation. It’s part of a larger modernization effort that includes the creation of space reconnaissance units, enhanced electronic warfare capabilities, and new cyber units. The strategy appears to be heavily influenced by current combat operations in Украина, where FPV Drones have proven highly effective in modern warfare.
DroneXL’s Take
This military modernization effort reflects a broader trend in drone technology advancement and adoption by armed forces worldwide. The shift from traditional weapons to unmanned systems shows how drones are revolutionizing military tactics and strategy. The increased range, accuracy, and reduced personnel requirements make this transition particularly noteworthy for other military forces considering similar modernization efforts.
