The residents of Frisco and Little Elm will be among the first people in the US, after Christiansburg, VA, to experience the Wing drone delivery service.

Wing has developed a dedicated app that allows customers to select items, choose a delivery zone – this could be a yard or a driveway – and place their order.

The drone delivery company partners with Walgreens to fulfill the orders and will set up so-called ‘nestlets’ in the parking lot to run its drone operations from.

In another Wing first, the retailer, not Wing, will fulfill the order.

“We want to make sure [our customers] understand that it’s safe, that it’s reliable, that it’s consistent – and that they’re going to enjoy a service they’ve never seen in their lives.” – Steven Yates, US Operations Manager

Previously, Wing was active in Christiansburg, where the company delivered small grocery items and library books to students during the Covid pandemic.

In an announcement, Wing states that the company has flown tens of thousands of drone flights and completed over 130,000 commercial drone deliveries globally.

Wing feels confident that with their experience, they are now ready to start delivering with drones in dense metropolitan environments such as Frisco and Little Elm, north of Dallas.

Is the Wing drone delivery service sustainable?

In an interview with Wingcopter, Bill Wimberley, Head of Business Development, wondered how companies can run a profitable business delivering products from businesses to consumers by drone. In his view, business-to-business was the only viable drone delivery service for now.

It will be interesting to see how successful Wing will be in the longer term. Keep in mind that Wing’s parent company also owns the search service Google and thus has very deep pockets.
