The FAA is looking for 180 drone industry leaders to participate in the survey that aims to gather information on “the common fatigue-related practices, and the minimum knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), testing, and staffing procedures required for operating UAS.”

The FAA will use the collected data to inform future rulemaking. It is crucial as the existing regulatory framework that includes airmen’s certification was not developed with remote pilots in mind.

“To broadly integrate UAS and remote pilots into the National Airspace System, further rulemaking will be required to address remote pilot certification for air carrier operations and flight and duty time periods applicable to remote pilot air carrier operations,” agency the agency.

The FAA is working to integrate drone operations into the national airspace to facilitate commercial operations, such as delivering medical supplies by drone. The critical stepping stones to make such operations a reality are Remote ID for Drones, flying UAS beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS), and flying over people. Currently, many commercial drone operations are only possible with a series of exemptions and waivers.

The FAA survey on drone pilot fatigue and rest will provide valuable information to develop rules that will help the drone industry’s continued growth.
