Drone Captures Stunning Footage of Boat in Gale-Force Winds
A recent YouTube video from SafeHaven Marine showcases the impressive capabilities of both maritime vessels and Drone Technology in extreme conditions.
Challenging Drone Flight in Rough Seas
The video features what seems to be a DJI Air 3 drone capturing footage of a 70-foot power multihull boat, named Voyager, as it powers through incredibly rough seas. The drone pilot faced significant challenges, operating in gale-force winds reaching up to 50 knots.

Frank Kowalski, presumably the boat’s captain, praised his crew’s efforts: “Hats off to my crew for flying the drone and recovering it whilst undertaking recent sea trials with Voyager, not an easy task from the boat offshore during a gale.”
Remarkable Drone Performance
Despite the harsh conditions, including high winds, salt water spray, and possibly rain, the DJI Air 3 performed admirably. The drone captured stunning aerial footage of the Voyager cutting through massive waves, demonstrating both the boat’s seaworthiness and the drone’s stability in turbulent air.
Daring Drone Recovery
Perhaps the most impressive feat was the drone’s recovery. The crew used a large net on the foredeck of the multihull to safely land the drone in heavy seas. This maneuver highlights the skill of both the drone pilot and the boat’s crew, working in tandem under challenging circumstances.
Pushing the Limits of Drone Technology
The footage serves as a testament to the advancing capabilities of consumer drones. The DJI Air 3, typically marketed for more casual use, proved its worth in professional maritime applications under extreme conditions.
Kowalski added, “We captured some great drone footage of her running fast in some fairly rough conditions.”
DroneXL’s Take
This impressive demonstration of drone resilience in maritime conditions aligns with the growing trend of using drones in challenging environments. As seen in recent search and rescue operations, drones are increasingly proving their worth in high-stakes situations. The ability to capture crucial footage or data in extreme conditions could be invaluable for maritime safety, research, and emergency response scenarios.
The successful operation of the DJI Air 3 in such harsh conditions also raises interesting questions about the future of drone design and capabilities. As manufacturers continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible, we may see more specialized drones developed for extreme environments, further expanding their utility across various industries.
