Counter-drone startup Anduril raises $200 million

The latest funding round of 200 million nearly doubles its prior valuation, bringing the value of counter-drone startup Anduril to $1.9 billion. The company is planning to use the latest cash infusion to improve its autonomous unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) and 人工智能 software, as well as make additional hires.

Anduril says that is has secured contracts with the US 国土安全部, the US 国防部 and the UK Ministry of Defence.

The Series C round was led by Andreessen Horowitz, and a number of other Silicon Valley venture capital firms and angel investors including Elad Gil, Founders Fund, General Catalyst, Human Capital, Lux Capital, Valor Equity Partners, and 8VC, according to FlightGlobal.

Anduril is working on the development of perimeter defense technologies that are designed to work together to combat a variety of intruders, including people, vehicles, and UAVs. To identify objects the system relies on computer vision and machine learning.

Anduril’s Lattice AI is the central nervous system of the technology, a computer network that combines and analyses data collected from sensors such as cameras fixed on ground stations and surveillance UAVs. The artificially intelligent software automatically coordinates a response to trespassers.

To take out intruding drones, Anduril’s system will launch its drone-smashing Anvil quadcopter automatically. The company claims that drone-to-drone collisions are the safest way to eliminate rogue drones or even swarm UAV attacks.

FlightGlobal reports that ‘Tthe US military is spending heavily on counter-UAV systems as it believes its short-range air defences are insufficient to stop small drones. The issue became top of mind for the Pentagon after 伊朗 allegedly sent swarms of drones laden with explosives to attack a Saudi Arabian oil processing facility in 2019.’
